The fact that Rolls-Royce has daily to deal with special wishes of its customers is part of the everyday life of the exclusive Marque. But four years ago the engineers in Goodwood were sweating. A British customer, the name is not, of course, named, wanted a Rolls-Royce two-seater. That was 2013.
This year, Rolls-Royce presented his great litter: the “Sweptail” is based on a phantom, whereby the similarity is hardly visible. The name is a tribute to the boat-like tail that was the trademark of Rolls-Royce in the 1920s. The Villa Este on Lake Como was the meeting place for all the classy, beautiful and expensive cars of the world.
The future owner of the car has chosen the name not without reason, so the luxurious coupé also resembles the interior of a yacht rather than a car. Noble woods, a huge glasspanorama roof and a kind of boat shelf instead of a rear bench.
The production was done by hand and, of course, by constant consultation with the customer. Every detail was taken care of, only the costs were a side issue. „Except for the bonnet, all body panels have been redesigned in elaborate handwork“, says Alex Innes, Bespoke Design Manager of the brand. Instead of steel sheet aluminum came into the wood molds The radiator grille was milled from solid aluminum and polished by hand on high gloss. In the side view, the long car body only interrupts the two vertical joints of the door. „This makes the Sweptail look as if it is a single piece,“ says Giles Taylor, Rolls-Royce Design Manager.
With the Sweptail Rolls-Royce redefines the personalization of luxury brands. “Sweptail is the automotive equivalent of haute couture,” commented Giles Taylor, Head of Design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. „Designed by Rolls-Royce and tailor-made for the customer.“ – „And who should build such a car, if not us?“ Asks Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös, of course purely rhetorical.
The price of the sweptail is, of course, not communicated, only that it is “several times” higher than with a “normal” Rolls-Royce. In British media, the number is 10 million pounds – that would make the Sweptail the most expensive new car of all time.
