Maserati Mexico

The history of the Maserati Mexico began with a crash. Senior Barosso, the Mexican owner of a Maserati Allemangno 5000 GT from the fleet of former Mexican President Adolfo López Mateos had an accident and brought his beloved sports car to the Maserati repair shop in Italy. In the workshop Barosso discovered the prototype of the 2 + 2 Coupé built by Frua. Barosso was wealthy, but thrifty and smart. To circumvent the Mexican import duty for the new car, he had the body of the prototype build on the chassis of his 5000 GT. In this way, the „coupe“ got its type designation Mexico and Barosso saved a nice penny.

Maserati had previously experimented for the Aga Khan in cooperation with the car dealership König, to design a four-seating two-door based on the Maserati Mistral, but the result was unsatisfying and it the idea was put down.

The Maserati Mexico was designed by a rather unknown designer at Frua called Virginio Vairo. But contrary to the fears, the rather sober-looking design was well accepted at the presentation of the prototype at the 1965 Turin Motor Show. Maserati decided to start the series production of the Mexico.

For series production Maserati revised the 2 + 2 Coupé again and designed more of a 2-door 4-seater sedan, which now only slightly reminiscent of a coupe. But the design now looks much more pleasing and elegant than the Quattroporte. The clients were enthusiastic about the sporty grace of the Mexico. The two twin exhaust pipes and Borani spoke wheels also provide the sporty face of the Mexico.

Under the long bonnet acts a 4.7-liter V8 engine with 300 hp at 5000 rpm. This gives the sporty four-seater a top speed of about 240 km / h. A five-speed gearbox transmits the power to the rear axle.

Electric power windows, an adjustable steering wheel and tinted windows were standard equipment. Maserati was particularly proud of the standard air conditioning system that did not even exist in a Rolls Royce back then.

The spacious interior is very luxurious. Leather upholstery, wood applications and a noble mixer battery complete the picture of pure elegance.
