Lamborghini Faena 1978

When designer Pietro Frua introduced the Lamborghini Faena to the Turin Motor Show in 1978, the 5.49m long car polarized the spectators. Not everyone was enthusiastic about the extravagant design. But car journalist Max Stoop wrote impressively: „Frua once again succeeded in putting a four-door, elongated Berlina on a Gran Turismo chassis and equipped it with four comfortable seats, without that the shape of the car sufferes.

In fact, the elegant, flat shape of this four-door GT is impressive, because despite extremely comfortable space inside, the sedan loses nothing of its sporty lightness.
The Lamborghini 400 GTs Espada 4P Faena is built on the base of a Lamborghini Espada 2 with a coachbuild body by Bertone, which was green when first delivered to Venezuela. In 1978 it was then converted to the hatchback coupe and the new blue livery by the studio Technico Pietro Frua in Turin. The self-supporting body with platform frame in a pressed steel half-shell construction was extended by 178mm and provided with additional reinforcements.

After another presentation, this time at the 50th Geneva Motor Show 1980, the luxurious Faena also got an automatically adjustable driver’s seat and an electric sunroof.
The sporty four-seater is powered by a longitudinal, water-cooled V-12 4-liter Tipo L 403 engine. Engine block and head are made of cast aluminum. Two chain-driven, overhead camshafts control one cylinder bank. Mixture preparation is provided by 6 Weber cross-flow twin carburettors. This gives the engine a power output of 350 hp at a revving 7500 rpm.

In his days, the Faena was the fastest shooting brake ever, with a top speed of 243 km / h. He needs between 16 and 18 liters per 100 kilometers, because the heavy weight of 1835 kilograms (empty) takes its toll. Contrary to the Lamborghini tradition of naming the vehicles after famous fighting bulls, the creation of Frua got the name Faena – the final thrust of the Torreros.
