Customizer Rolf Reick gives a BMW R60 / 6, built in 1976, a new operable look. The occasion is the FESTTAGE premiere “Falstaff” at the Staatsoper “Unter den Linden”, which has been cooperating with the BMW Group for ten years. From the 25th of March the audience of Verdi’s opera “Falstaff” will be able to marvel at the machine in action.
The bike’s engine was scaffolded by Customizer Reick. Control unit, DC converter and batteries then came in the original tank of the 130-kilogram bike. The motorcycle is powered by a wheel hub motor installed in the front wheel. There was also a programmable controller and an electronic throttle. Visually, the old BMW Motorrad line should be preserved, but something refreshed and reduced. Accordingly, the exhaust and the frame tail were shortened.
“Silver as a color works very well on stage with all the light reflections and supports the balanced BMW Motorrad shape,” says Rolf Reick. The painting was done by Michael Schönen, the paint artist of his trust. The customizer worked on the bike for about two months and equipped it with stage-suitable 25 km / h. “I do not just build motorcycles as an assignment, but always a little bit for myself as well. I always have to feel well dressed,” Reick continues.
As a graphic designer, Reick has always been fighting for bad design and, together with buddy Ulrich Lenz, runs the iconic workshop “Krautmotors” in Heidelberg. “At Krautmotors, it’s about joie de vivre, not fear of life,” explains Reick. In 1996, the industrial design graduate received an award from the now named “Custombike” magazine for the most beautiful converted Café Racer. In 2003, his BMW Motorrad Bobber was named German Custom Bike of the Year by motorcycle magazine “Mo”.
A fixed institution in the Berlin cultural calendar is the open-air format “Staatsoper für alle”, which annually attracts around 45,000 visitors to the Bebelplatz. It is a successful example of the cooperation between the Staatsoper “Unter den Linden” and the BMW Group. The provision of a BMW Motorrad R60 / 6 for the “Falstaff” staging is another opportunity for synergies between the two partners.
