Mercedes-Benz is once again sponsor of this years Mille Miglia (19. until 22.May). The company itself sends numerous vehicles from the own collection on the “1000 miles”, including the Mercedes-Benz types such as 300 SLs, SS and SSKs. And for the first time at the new edition of the Mille Miglia, also a 190 SL will be at the start: original documents prove, that in 1956 a Mercedes 190SL was taking part at the Mille Miglia. The French drivers team Michel Bianco and Jean Loup Pellecuer, start number 347, reached the 121. place at that time, after a ride time of 16 hours, 6 minutes and 15 seconds.
A total 440 vehicles are in the competition, of which 70 already took part in the original races between 1927 and 1957. A Ferrari 340 driven formerly by Gigi Villoresi which won the 1951 Mille Miglia , deserves special mention. At the start will be the Alfa Romeo 6 C 2300 Pescara from the former possession of the dictator Benito Mussolini. This Alfa had participated in 1936 with Ercole Boratto.
Italian Classics are at the leadership at the Mille Miglia by brands. Alfa Romeo comes with 64 vehicles (61 had applied), Fiat will bring 39 at the start (there were 46). Mercedes-Benz is represented with 33 Classics (57 were reported). Bugatti: 20 vehicles, Jaguar 20, Lancia 39, 17 Aston Martin, Porsche 21. The remaining 75 seats are divided to more 71 various manufacturers.
87 participants come from Germany – 161 had applied. Switzerland is represented by 35 (65 applications), Holland 68 participants from 115 applications, United States 50 out of 66 candidates.
