Monterey Auction

For three days, the auction marathon lasted in Monterey last weekend. In total, six auction houses auctioned a total of 1376 lots, of which 841 vehicles found a new owner. Also this year there were some record sales again. Three vehicles were auctioned for over $ 20 million, bringing the auction houses a record $ 367 million.

The highlight among all auction houses was certainly the Ferrari 250 GTO Series II, which was auctioned off on Friday evening at RM Auctions. Racing legend Derek Bell put the stunning Ferrari on stage as the bidding battle started at $ 35 million. Three bidders had an exciting competition for the Ferrari, one of only 36 built models with proven racing history. The body of the 250 GTO was built by Scaglietti and all parts of the super sports car correspond to the „matching numbers“, ie all parts correspond to the delivery condition and have the correct part number. The hammer finally fell to $ 48.405,000. A new world record, making this Ferrari 250 GTO the most expensive vehicle in the world. The previous owner had acquired the Ferrari 2000 for $ 7 million.

Another world record was the spectacular Duesenberg SSJ Roadster, built in 1935, which was auctioned off at Goodings & Co. The sleek prewar vehicle scored a whopping $ 22 million. The Duesenberg SSJ was the first US American supercar and was originally owned by Garry Cooper.

The third highest price went to the 1963 Aston Martin DP215 Grand Touring Competition Prototype. The former Le Mans works race car changed ownership for 21,455,000.
All in all, it was evident that the market for collectors‘ vehicles is experiencing a clear upward trend. As long as the offered vehicle has a unique history, interesting origin or uniqueness, there were sufficient bidders. Quality and an interesting history are still a good investment base.

On the other hand, in contrast to last year, some of the modern supersports cars in particular did not even reach the lower estimate.
