Future with Origin

First editions have their own charm, even if they do have historical roots. In the fifties, when a skier was pulled by a car on a rope, Skijöring was considered the most dangerous sport ever. Porsche 550 Spyder, 356er and the super lightweight “Fetzenflieger” constructed by the racing driver Otto Mathé in the fifties fought for the positions in Zell am See. The young organization duo Ferdinand Porsche, great-grandson of the company’s founder, and his study friend Vinzenz Greger will set up a motorsport spectacle without precedent in the first edition of the GP Ice Race from 18 to 20 January 2019 – with a celebrity density, which is topped only by Lord of March at Goodwood and an incredible variety of vehicles: patron Striezel Stuck drove the Auto Union Type C racing car from 1938 on the ice track, the Prototype museum in Hamburg presented the authentic Fetzenflieger with Fuhrmann Engine, Emanuele Maria Tabacchi the legendary 550 Spyder with the large spoiler designed by Michael May, Le Mans winner Marc Lieb a private Porsche 924, Matthias Kahle the Skoda RS, Jochi Kleint the twin-engined VW Golf 2 Pikes Peak from 1987, Walter Röhrl Audi Sport Quattro and Daniel Abt the Formula E-World Cup racer. The VW group was therefore represented with almost all brands. Private collectors, for whom driving pleasure is above collecting in heated garages, brought the variety.

The team from Solitude GmbH, the PR and event agency based in the Motorworld Region Stuttgart, with the daring skier Rainer Kühlwein, started on a Porsche 911 L from 1968 in the Skijöring class and was celebrated during the event for the best outfit.

Everything went surprisingly well for a first event. The only critic might be the mixed rating: How should a Porsche 356 win against a four-wheel drive Mitsubishi Evo 9? This mix valued the right classics a little bit and brought the diversity and fascination of modern times to the fore. Maybe the right approach to appeal to more and younger viewers. In fact, the event attracted over 8,000 visitors to the permafrost behind the stove; It was also striking how many young people were among the spectators and in Instagram a real firework of photos set off. The future has begun.
