Outsiders in the focus

At the end the outsiders at the Artcurial Auction in Paris during the Rétromobile were more in the focus than the hotly announced highlights of the auction. These remained below expectations. The Dino Berlinetta special prototype, with the estimated value between 4 and 8 million euro, was sold for 4.390.400 euro and was thus the record holder for the highest price in the auction. The Ferrari 330S Scaglietti changed the owner in 2016 for 32 million euros, but for the offered Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa the hammer fell at just EUR 2,960,000. The Lamborghini Miura SV of 1972 was sold for 2.331.200 Euro. The Mercedes 300SL had just about exceeded the one million Euro mark.

The outsiders who stole the show were “Thoroughbred Cars”. A Citroën 2CV of 1955 was sold for 53.640 euros. A second 2CV of 1990, Citroën 2CV Dolly, reached a total of 42.912 euros. A Renault 4CV sports 1955 achieved proudly 17.880 euros, and was still the cheapest car of the entire auction. The light blue Volkswagen T1 21 window Bully bus changed the owner for 97.744 euros. For the Citroen BX4 TC the hammer dropped at 76.557 euros. The Fiat 500 special reached 26.224 euros.

Once again, Artcurial was able to sell two barn finds again this year. The Citroën DS 19 convertible actually reached a maximum bid of 101.320 euros. Considering the bid for the Citroën DS Concorde with a body by Chapron, which was auctioned for 157.344 euros, however, one can see a clear trend of value increasing for unrestored and original vehicles. So also with the Delahaye 235 with Chapron body, which changed for 83,440 euro the owner. This Delahaye 235 was already auctioned at Artcurial in 2015. At that time he came from the Baillon collection and a bidder bought it for 100,000 euros. This time the vehicle was estimated at 20,000 to 25,000 euros.

Far above the estimate was the AC Bristol Roadster from 1956, which changed the owner for 321.840 euros. The Jaguar XK120 roadster from 1952 left the ramp with a bid of 149,000 euros. The Cadillac Series 62, preowned by Albert Uderzo, the illustrator of Asterix, scored 127,544 euros. The beige Facel Vega Excellence was auctioned with a grand total of 89,400 euros, while a Facel Vega HK 500 even reached a total of 154,960 euros.

A highlight of this year Artcurial auction during the Retromobil was the collection of Herve Oglaistro. This included a Bébé Bugatti children’s vehicle, that Ettore Bugatti had built his five-year-old son. The maximum bid was 92,976 euros. The Talbot Lago T150 C remained below expectations with € 1,610,550. On the other hand, the Bugatti Type 57 reached almost double the Estimate with 2.331.200 Euro.

The audience was eagerly waiting for the results for the two vehicles preowned by Johnny Hallyday, a Cadillac Series 62 Cabriolet with a Boyd Coddington Custom Conversion and a Harley Davidson. The Cadillac was awarded with 270,000 euros. The Harley Davidson sold at 280,000 euros. Here they were finally, the record results, because the Harley had an Estimate of 20,000 euros, the Cadillac an Estimate of 50,000 euros. The resulted sales were used for a charity purpose.
