It has been 65 years since Alfa Romeo introduced an all-terrain vehicle: the Alfa Romeo 1900 M, also known as Matta, “The crazy”. The off-road Alfa Romeo should replace the Jeep in the military. However, civilian models were also built, such as the serial number 001 shown here, which was on show at the new car presentation of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio at Grill Sportivo.
Alfa Romeo is now with the Stelvio, after the Guilia in 2016, even further into the Premuim League. The new all-wheel-drive SUV provides a new sportiness. If the force is transferred first to the rear axle, the front axle can be switched on at the push of a button. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Super is equipped with the electronically controlled AlfaTM Q4 all-wheel drive, the eight-speed automatic transmission, the AlfaTM DNA driving dynamics with the new “Advanced Efficiency” mode. The perfect driving behavior and the spacious interior make the Stelvio absolutely competitive with the competition. Under the bonnet is a 280 hp turbo petrol engine. Optionally you can also switch to the 2.2 liter four-cylinder diesel engine. This achieves a total output of 180HP.
The interior is pleasantly instantaneous thanks to the wooden adornments and the greatly reduced control elements. Almost all settings are controlled on the multi-media touchscreen. The new Alfa Romeo Stelvio Super spoils the driver with the dashboard personalized on him, the AlfaTM Connect infotainment system with a 6.5-inch color display (16.5 cm), a high-quality audio system with eight speakers, a vehicle information center with 3.5-inch 8.9 cm) large TFT color display, leather steering wheel with integrated engine start button as well as entrance slats made of aluminum. The seats are covered with a combination of fabric and leather. The introductory model Alfa Romeo Stelvio “First Edition” is even more comprehensive. Also standard are bi-xenon headlights with dynamic curve light, 20-inch light-alloy wheels and the electric tailgate on board. For added comfort, seat covers are made of grained leather, real wood decor covers, eight-way adjustable and heated seats for the driver and passenger as well as the entertainment system AlfaTM Connect with an 8.8 inch (22.4 cm) screen with HD resolution and integrated 3D Navigation system. The central instrument behind the steering wheel is the vehicle information center with a seven-inch (17.8 cm) large TFT color display.
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio also offers state-of-the-art security systems. These include, among others, six airbags, the integrated braking system including electronic stability control (ESC), traction slip control (ASR), anti-lock braking system (ABS) and trailer stability control (TSA), collision warning system (FCW) with autonomous emergency brake function (AEB) and pedestrian detection, Rain sensor as well as park sensors behind.
The Stelvio model name is, by the way, an homage to the highest asphalted pass road in the Italian Alps, the second highest in Europe – the Stilfser Joch. The “Strada Statale 38 dello Stelvio” winds with 75 turns and, in some cases, more than seven percent of the climb up to the elevation of 2,758 meters, this unique road was the inspiration for the fun and performance offered by the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio .
